Sean and Susan’s daughter Alexandra is a healthy 22 year old because of one man, Dr. Aldo Castaneda. Alexandra was born with a severe heart defect, just at the time that Dr. Castaneda was pioneering heart surgeries for babies and small children. Without him we would have lost our child. Every child, anywhere, who has had heart surgery under the age of two, is the direct beneficiary of Dr. Castaneda’s innovations in pediatric heart surgery.
Dr. Castenada has spent his “retirement” developing a surgical pediatric center in Guatemala. Having no previous pediatric heart surgery available anywhere in Central America, children born there with heart defects had no hope. Now in its 10th year, Dr Castaneda has trained three pediatric heart surgeons, and has assembled a team of cardiologists, anesthesiologists, nurses, and support staff. For the first time, children throughout Central America have the opportunity for life-saving surgery, and their parents will receive the gift that we were given – the opportunity to watch their children grow up.
With approximately 1300 children born in Guatemala alone each year with a heart defect, the needs are great. We have seen first-hand the beauty of a young life saved through heart surgery.
